Are You a Beach Person or a Mountains Person?

Someone asked me recently, “Do you like the beach?” I replied, “I do. And the mountains. And lakes. And the desert. And the woods.” God’s creation is so magnificent, so resplendent in its diversity! From the shores of the Caribbean to the red rocks of Sedona, how could I possible pick one over the other?

I love creation, and I love the Creator. In fact, these things go hand in hand. As David sang, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (Psalm 19:1 ESV) So as a believer, what are my responsibilities as a lover of creation and of the Creator?

  • First, like David, I should revel in the splendor of every beautiful sunset, every budding flower, and every change of season.

  • Second, I should use every beautiful thing to remind my children of the glory of God.

  • Third, I should always keep my love of creation far beneath my love of the Creator. (Romans 1:18-23)

  • Fourth, I should take care of what God gave me.

Prayer: Dear Lord, When we look around at all the beautiful things you have done, we know that you are there, and we know that you are great. Thank you for the mountains, the rivers, the oceans, the deserts, and all of the wonders you prepared for us. Please help our children see you as we have seen you. In Jesus name, Amen

Three of my favorite places God created.

  • The red rock formations near Sedona, AZ. Locals say that God created the Grand Canyon, but he lives in Sedona.

  • Crater Lake in Oregon. One of the clearest and cleanest lakes in all of creation.

  • Roatan, an island off the coast of Honduras. God put the second largest barrier reef in the world just a short swim off of the beach.

My son and a friend hiking near Sedona, AZ.
Crater Lake, Oregon. Easily the most breathtaking view I've seen.
Roatan, Honduras, my favorite beach, has the second largest barrier reef in the world.
