An Angel Appears

Matthew 1:18-24; Luke 1:5-56

  • What did the angel, Gabriel, tell Zechariah? His wife, Elizabeth, would conceive a son, and they would name him John.

  • How did Zechariah answer? “How shall I know this?  for I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.”

  • What did the angel, Gabriel, tell Mary? Gabriel told Mary that she had found favor with God and that she would give birth to a son named Jesus.

  • What did Gabriel say that Jesus would be called? Son of the Most High

  • What did the angel of the Lord say to Joseph in a dream? The angel told Joseph to take Mary as his wife.  Her baby was from the Holy spirit.  She would have a son, and they would name him Jesus.

  • What did the angel tell Joseph that Jesus would one day do? He would save people from their sins.

  • What happened when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting? Her baby, John, leaped in her belly. 

Jesus' Birth

Luke 2:1-21

  • Where was Jesus born? In a city called Bethlehem.

  • Who appeared to the shepherds? An angel of the Lord.

  • What did the angel say to them? “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

  • Where did the shepherds go after hearing the angel? They went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph with a baby laying in a manger.

  • What did they tell Mary and Joseph? They told them everything that they had heard from the angel.

  • What did Mary do? “Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”

The Wise Men Visit Jesus

Matthew 2:1-18

  • Who was the King when Jesus was born?  Herod. 

  • How did the wise men know that the “king of the Jews” had been born?  They saw “His star” rise in the sky.

  • Where did the wise men travel from?  “The East.”

  • How did Herod feel when the wise men came and asked him about the “king of the Jews?”  Troubled.

  • Where did the chief priests and scribes tell Herod the Christ was supposed to be born according to prophecies?  Bethlehem of Judea.

  • What did Herod tell the wise men to do?  To go to Bethlehem and find the baby and come back and tell him so he could worship him too.

  • How did the wise men find Jesus?  The star appeared again and led them.

  • Where were Mary, Joseph, and Jesus living when the wise men found them? In a house.

  • What gifts did the wise men bring to Jesus and his family? Gold, Frankincense, Myrrh.

  • How many wise men came to visit the little boy Jesus?  The Bible never says.

  • What were the wise men told in a dream? Don’t go see Herod on the way home.

  • What did the angel tell Joseph to do to keep his family safe from Herod? Flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you.

  • How long did Joseph, Mary, and Jesus stay in Egypt? Until the death of Herod

Young Jesus Visits the Temple

Luke 2:41-52

  • Why did Jesus’ family go to Jerusalem?  For the Passover Feast (Luke 2:41)

  • In the story where Jesus’ family went to Jerusalem, how old was he?  12 years old (Luke 2:42)

  • How long had Jesus’ parents traveled on their way home before they realized Jesus was not with them?  A day (Luke 2:44)

  • What were Jesus’ parents first reaction?  To look with relatives and friends to see if he was with them (Luke 2:44)

  • How long did it take his parents to find him?  3 days (Luke 2:46)

  • Where did they find him? In the temple (Luke 2:46)

  • What was Jesus doing when they found him?  Listening to the teachers and asking questions (Luke 2:46)

  • How did the people in the temple feel about the boy Jesus?  They were amazed at his understanding and his answers. (Luke 2:47)

  • Where did Jesus say he was when his Mother asked him about why he scared them?  “His Father’s House”  (Luke 2:49)

  • When Jesus went home with his parents, what does the Bible tell us he did?  He “grew in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52)
