Death of John the Baptist

Matthew 14:1-12; Mark 6:14-29

  • Why did Herod the tetrarch have John the Baptist thrown into prison?  (John said that it was not lawful for Herod to take his brother’s wife, Herodias, for himself.)

  • Why was Herod afraid to execute John? (He was afraid that the people he ruled would become angry.)

  • What did the daughter of Herodias do to please Herod? (She danced for Herod at his birthday party.)

  • What did Herod say after Herodias’s daughter danced for him?  (Ask me for anything, up to half my kingdom, and I’ll give it to you.)

  • What did Herodias tell her daughter to ask for? (The head of John the Baptist on a platter)

  • Who took and buried the body of John the Baptist, and who did they tell? (John’s disciples; they told Jesus)

  • When King Herod heard about Jesus and how he was doing miracles, what did Herod think? (He thought John the Baptist had come back from the dead.)

Jesus Feeds the 5,000 

Matt 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17; John 6:1-15

  • What did Jesus do when he heard about the death of his cousin, John? (He went away in a boat to a desolate place.)

  • When Jesus got in a boat and tried to go to a place to be by himself, what did the crowds do?  (They followed him on foot from the towns.)

  • When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were like _________ without a _________. (Sheep without a shepherd)

  • What did Jesus say to the disciples when they told him to send the crowd away to get food for themselves?  (“They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”)

  • How many loaves of bread did they have?  How many fish?  (5 loaves of bread and 2 fish)

  • What did Jesus do with the loaves and fish?  (He blessed them, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples to give to the crowd.)

  • How much food was leftover after the 5,000 all ate and were satisfied?  (12 baskets full)

Jesus Walks on Water

Matt 14:22-36; Mark 6:45-56; John 6:16-21

  • After feeding the 5,000, Jesus dismissed the crowds. Where did he send his disciples? (He sent them across the sea on a boat.)

  • After feeding the 5,000 and sending his disciples to the other side of the sea in a boat, where did Jesus go?  (He went up on the mountain by himself to pray.)

  • When Jesus finished praying on the mountain, the disciples’ boat was far from land. Why couldn’t the boat come to land? (The wind was blowing hard against them.)

  • What did Jesus do when he saw that the disciples’ boat couldn’t come to land to get him?  (He walked out across the water to them.)

  • What did his disciples think when they saw Jesus walking on the water? (They thought he was a ghost.)

  • When the disciples cried out in fear, thinking they were seeing a ghost, what did Jesus say to them? (“Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”)

  • What happened when Peter tried to walk out onto the water to meet Jesus? (He became afraid when he saw the wind, and he cried out for Jesus to save him.)

  • How did Jesus respond to Peter’s cry for help when Peter started to sink? (He reached out and took a hold of him and said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”)

Peter’s Confession & The Transfiguration 

Matthew 16:13-17:13; Mark 8:27-9:13; Luke 9:18-36

  • When Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”, how did the disciples answer? (“Some say John the Baptist, other say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”)

  • How did Simon Peter answer the question, “But who do you say that I am?” (“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”)

  • What did Jesus say to Simon Peter when Simon confessed Jesus as the Christ? (“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”)

  • What was Simon Bar-Jonah called after he confessed Jesus as the Christ? Why? (He was called Peter, which means rock, because Jesus said, “on this rock I will build my church…”)

  • After Peter’s confession, Jesus started telling his disciples that he would be killed and raised on the third day. Who rebuked Jesus for saying this? (Peter)

  • When Peter rebuked Jesus for speaking of his death, what did Jesus say to Peter? (Get behind me, Satan!)

  • When Jesus went onto a high mountain and was transfigured, who did Jesus take with him? (Peter, James, and John)

  • Who appeared to Jesus at the transfiguration? (Moses and Elijah)

  • What did God say from the cloud at the transfiguration? (This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.)
